Elvis Costello on SNL

Way back in the 70's Elvis Costello appeared on Saturday Night Live as a late minute replacement for the Sex Pistols to perform "Less than Zero.” Two bars into the song he stops the performance and the band switch to “Radio Radio”. This, apparently, pissed of the producer of SNL and got him banned for the rest of the century. Regardless, it's great performance.

Tintin Movie in Pre Production

OH. MY. GOD! The Steven Spielberg produced, Peter Jackson directed Tintin movie is now in pre production. Looks like it's going to be a fully rendered 3D production. I know this sounds a bit giddy but, OH MY GOD!!!

How to design a power socket

Good design will always be important. Case in point: the Rozetkus 3D power socket. It hides in the wall (posing as single outlet socket) but when required it pops out of the wall and becomes 5 outlets of goodness.

Collapse of Consumer Credit

Long but extremely interesting article on the Collapse of Consumer Credit. It refers to the American situation but may very well have a bearing on the world economy.

It's the end of the world as we know it ... and I feel fine.

Newsweek has a lovely insight into the changes wrought by the Internet on "old" media. Hmmm.. on reflection perhaps "wreaked havoc" might be a better description.

Nuclear Energy: Facts and Fiction

The Oil Drum has an interesting article about nuclear energy that examines the facts and fiction of Breeder reactors and fusion energy. This is part IV of the series. I recommend the read.

Mystery Persian Army Found

In archeological news: an ancient Persian army which, legend has it, mysteriously vanished in the Egyptian desert two and a half thousand years ago has apparently been found. Still some doubt as to the accuracy of this but exciting news none the less.

A Ronald Reagan "Must Have"...

This is, quite simply, one of those "must have" items of vinyl goodness: "Ronald Reagan Speaks Out Against Socialized Medicine". Why was this even produced? Wikipedia has a short article on the reasons behind the creation of this little gem entitled: "Operation Coffee Cup". Especially interesting in light of the current debate in Septic Land about health care

You can't afford to be skinny

Times have changed, 50 years ago it was hip to be fat. Reminds me of Jeremy Taylor' (at the time) revolutionary song "Black-White Calypso" from the musical "Wait a Minim".

The Three Phases of Owning a Computer

A most chucklesome missive from the folks at "The Oatmeal" on the Three Phases of Owning a Computer. I'm still in the Comfortable Phase (Phase 2) but then ... I've got a Mac. Mind you, I've had a couple of PC's that skipped phases 1 & 2 and plonked me straight into phase 3!

Dr. Seuss and The 5000 Fingers of Dr. T

Wow, Dr Seuss never fails to amaze me. I had no idea that there was a movie, made in the 1950's and years before he became internationally famous, called "The 5000 Fingers of Dr. T". Great page about it here. The author also suggests that it was the basis of the Simpsons, you be the judge.

Fruit is a lie.

OK, so you probably know that a tomato is, in reality, a fruit not a vegetable but did you know that hardly any of the "fruit" we eat is technically fruit? The Schrodingerskitten Blog has an interesting article on the issue.

The Mighty Hillman Hunter

Ah the memories come flooding back - this was our family car in the '70's. Couple of links to a Brochure for the Hillman Hunter Safari: Page 1 and Page 2. Check out the the cool dude in the Safari Suit on page one and then feast your eyes on the specs on page two:
  • Glove box
  • Windshield Washers
  • Heater with Blower
  • Child-proof rear door locks
  • Reversing lights
  • Seat Belts (front only)
  • and (wait for it) Rear view mirror
Whew, talk about luxury!

The shocking truth behind drug company profits

The UK's Independent has a shocking article on how the drug company's manipulate the system to produce overpriced drugs and prevent poor countries from benefiting from advances in medications. Key points:
  • Only 14% of Drug companies budgets is spent on research
  • Most of the work carried out by scientists is done in government-funded university labs (paid for by your taxes)
  • Drug company's spend more to develop "me too" drugs that are essentially the same as their existing patents rather than develop new drugs
  • The drug companies spent more than $3bn on lobbyists and political "contributions" over the past decade in the US alone
  • Virtually nothing is spent on diseases, like malaria, because the victims are poor, so there's hardly any profit
All of this is not new. John le Carré wrote a magnificent book "The Constant Gardener" about the international drug companies - it's well worth the read.

Comparison of music sales by media

The New York Times has an amazing graphic that compares music sales by media. It also shows the point when sales were at maximum and in what year. Essentially, CD's are toast but digital media downloads are beginning to explode.

Crimson Dark

I've stumbled on to another great Web based Comic called: "Crimson Dark". Billed as a "SciFi Webcomic", It's a bit like "Firefly" meets "Babylon 5" (ah, yeah, that's a good thing) and is updated about once a week.

Free File Hosting at Fileden

I've found a free file host that appears to be (a) easy to use and (b) easy enough to download from. They go by the name of Fileden and provide free registration and pretty much hassle free uploads and downloads. An ideal way to link large and small files to your Blog.

Bodpave grass pavers

BodPave grass pavers are an interlocking cellular paving grid system for grass and ground reinforcement applications where there is regular pedestrian or vehicle use. Ideal for lawns which cars frequently park on.

The Ashes Begin Tonight

The much anticipated (by me, at any rate) 2009 Ashes begin with the First Test at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff, Wales tonight. Heaps of controversy about the location with Ricky Ponting apparently somewhat perturbed about the pitch and calling foul. I mean, who's even heard of Sophia Gardens? The English and Wales Cricket Board pitch panel have and they found it to be sub-standard and concluded that it: "demonstrated excessive turn and should therefore be rated poor". Indeed.

The Teams wont be announced until just before the match but there's still much discussion about who'll be bowling for Australia now that Brett Lee has been ruled out due to torn muscle. I'm hoping it'll be Ben Hilfenhaus and Nathan Hauritz but I suspect Hilfenhaus will be nudged out by Stuart Clark. I think this would be a mistake as Clark hasn't bowled since last December and doesn't appear to have any form. Hilfenhaus, on the other hand, performed admirably in South Africa against the Proteas, has youth and a prodigious outswinger in his favour. Hauritz should be a shoe in as it appears the pitch will take spin (see above) but the selectors may prefer the part timers (North, Clarke and Katich).

At any rate, come 7:30 tonight I'll be sitting in front of SBS, wine in one hand, home made pizza in the other and anticipating some classic Ashes cricket. Yes, I know: tragic, just tragic.

Hysterical Billy Squire Video

I saw Billy Squire’s video on "Spicks and Specks" some time ago and it's hysterical. It probably ended up destroying his career, which, on reflection, may not have been such a bad thing. This is gold.

Electric Bike Goes on Sale in U.S.

Best Buy (one of the major U.S. retailers) has announced that it will be selling an electric motorbike as part of it's range of eco-friendly vehicles. The bike retails for about (AU)$15,000 and does 88 kph, has a 72 km range with a charge of three hours. Not exactly galvanising figures but it does point to the future of intra city transport.

17 Sensational, Free and Downloadable Graphic Novels

Ever since I got switched onto "FreakAngels" I've been looking for more (free) online graphic novels (ok, ok, comics - happy now?). So, here's a collection of 17 Sensational, Free and Downloadable Graphic Novels, I haven't reviewed them but they're certainly worth a look.

GFC - Reagan Did It

Paul Krugman looks at the origins of the current Global Financial Crisis (GFC) and tracks them back to changes initiated by the Regan administration back in the early 1980's. Regan era deregulation essentially changed the landscape of financial lending and culminated in the current disaster.

The Evolution of House Cats

The Scientific American has a very interesting article about the evolution of house cats. Apparently they've been associated with humans for about 10,000 years (not 3,600 as previously thought) and provide no benefit to humans. Obviously written by a dog loven' scientist! :-)

NEWS FLASH: Trujillo was useless at Telstra

Finally someone has come out and admitted the blindingly obvious: Trujillo was a costly mistake for Telstra.  In the end he may have done Australia a favour and broken down the Monopoly that is Telstra, but don't hold your breath.  Anyway, good riddance.

FreakAngels

I've just stumbled apon a brilliant web based graphic novel.  It's called "FreakAngels" and it's totally engrosing.  It's tagline:
"23 years ago, twelve strange children were born in England at exactly the same moment.  6 years ago, the world ended.  This is the story of what happened next."

How To Grow Grass

Lawn grass is about the simplest plant to grow so how come people find it dificult? I mean, really, what is it we're trying to do? Generally all we're attempting to create is a reasonably flat utility space that is easy to look after, something the kids can play on without hurting themselves and an area to sit down comfortably. Are you really attempting to create a bowling green? Nope!

So here's 6 simple tips to growing grass:
    1. Lift your mower blades up. Most people mow their grass to short. Grass needs to be at least 2.5 Cm's high. This allows the grass to shade out all it's competitors (ie: weeds) and acts to conserve water. It also provides the lovely comfortable cushion of grass we all enjoy sitting and walking on.
    2. Buy a mulching mower - they're only a couple of hundred bucks more than a bog standard mower. Mulching not only returns the nutrients to the soil but also helps to prevent competitor plants (ie: weeds) from growing. Never, never use a grass catcher - you're throwing away all the goodness in your yard. Always mulch your grass.
    3. Don't fertilise (as much). That's right: CUT DOWN ON HOW MUCH YOU FERTILISE! If you mulch (see above) there's much less of a need to fertilise your grass because it already has most of the goodness it needs to grow. A light dressing of organic fertiliser (e.g.: Dynamic Lifter) once a year is more than enough.
    4. Never, ever, topdress your lawn.
    5. Never hand water. It's very tempting to hand water in times of drought and water restrictions but this only encourages unhealthy shallow root growth. Healthy grass has vigorous deep roots which source water from well below the surface. Grass with shallow roots die off as soon as the surface becomes dry.
    6. Get yourself an automatic watering system (or get someone to install it) and ensure your grass is getting about 25mm of water per meter/week. Test by putting a can under the sprinklers when they're running and if you can collect 25mm in the bottom of the can it's the right amount of water.
